1 the state of being free from oppression or imprisonment. 2 a right or privilege, especially a statutory one. 3 the power or scope to act as one pleases. 4 informal a presumptuous remark or action."

This is a syllable of unrecorded history. After having to retell the tale of Nazar and his ill mother, and explain how Dr. Jekyll managed to split the good and evil of man, and listing the good deeds of Dato Onn Ja'afar, students lay down their trusty pencils, patting themselves on their backs for surviving yet another day of writing frenzy and darkening circles. Finally, after having to determine the location of Switzerland on a map, the lips of that cold facilitator parted as a chain of strangely warm words were released.

"Masa sudah tamat. Sila berhenti menulis dan letakkan pensel anda. Anda tidak dibenarkan bergerak daripada tempat anda sehingga semua kertas jawapan dipungut."

Tanggal Tujuh Belas Ogos
Tahun Dua
Kosong Kosong Lapan
Merdeka, Merdeka
Tetaplah Merdeka
Ia pasti menjadi sejarah

Tanggal Tujuh Belas Ogos
Tahun Dua
Kosong Kosong Lapan
Hari yang mulia
Hari bahagia
Sambut dengan jiwa yang merdeka

Mari kita murid tingkatan tiga
Ramai-ramai menyambut hari merdeka

Satu tujuh bulan Ogos tahun kosong lapan
Hari mulia muridku merdeka
